Since it's launch back in November, the PS4 has sold 5.3 million units, A staggering successful launch for a brand new console, and the system has just launched in it's home territory Japan which one would assume will dominate sales and further adds to the total income. To be fair to the Xbox One, it's launch was also successful selling over 3 million units. all this further outlines how strong the gaming industry actually is, after a couple years of false panic from media sources outside of the industry, that it was failing and there would be a big crash like back in the 80's.
The success of the platform has caught the company and a lot of analyst by surprise. There was no doubt in my mind that both launches would be successful. But, PS4's numbers are beyond good, compared to it's predecessors. The surprise of it's success has lead Sony to admit that machine will still most likely still remain difficult to find for the time being.
PlayStation UK executive Fergal Gara had this to say " I can’t work the math out precisely, but based on what I’ve seen so far, I think it is going to be [hard to find a console] until around about April. You might get a fortnight or a week here or there where it is more available, but we should be back to free supply by about April… That’s our best guess. It might be a little earlier than that, or it might be a little later. But we’ll get there"
Gara explained that the pre-orders were strong for the console, but added that "They were so big that we were pinching ourselves and wondering if people were pre-ordering in more than one place, and if some of these pre-orders were real... We were getting numbers we never imagined, let alone seen before. But it proved to be real.”
Well there you have it, this shortage is going to continue for the next month or so. Hopefully, when it comes to the holidays this year that there won't be the same shortage because that season will be crucial to propelling the sales of the machine well into the future. It's frustrating for fans or parents who are still trying to get a hold of a PS4, but this is the way of things. It takes a long time to manufacture these consoles, and then get them out to the stores, and launching a console is always a risk, traditionally you operate at a loss when you release a console, so as a company you have to be strategic with how many you produce.
