Right now novel adaptions are a dime-a-dozen in hollywood, with studios chomping at the bit for young adult novels to turn into successful film franchises. The latest in this trend is Divergent which is heading to theaters in March of this year. A while ago it was announced that the second and third books in the Divergent trilogy would be adapted with Insurgent coming in March 2015 and Allegiant in 2016, which may or may not get split into two parts.
Neil Burger, the director of the first installment, announced that he would not be returning to the series. Which called into question exactly who would replace him for the next installments. Well, that question has been answered, Red and R.I.P.D director Robert Schwentke will be taking over directorial duties. While it hasn't been confirmed if the director will actually direct the final chapter.
Production for the Insurgentl will begin this may. It's an interesting choice, Red received positive reviews and was a moderate box office success, but R.I.P.D was very much dead on arrival at the box office, and critically panned. So it could go either way. Considering that the first film isn't even out yet, Lionsgate has a lot of faith that divergent will be a big hit. Already being marketed as "the next hunger games", Lets see if these movies actually live up to the same level of quality.
