Warner has announced a brand new 3rd person action Lord of The Rings game called Middle-Earth:Shadow Of Mordor. The game is promised to tell a original story about retribution. The game is being developed by Monolith Studios the same studio who brought you F.E.A.R and Guardians Of Middle Earth, and is set to hit PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360.
The game will have you play a ranger, whose family is slaughtered by Sauron and his armies, then killed himself. He's resurrected by Wraith abilities, and goes on to fight against Mordor. The story is going to align with the ring of power from the original trilogy but will not overlap.
Warner's Samantha Ryan talked a little about what to expect from the game, here's what she had to say : "Players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death... The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customized gameplay that will be rewarding for players"
Not much more information was given about the actual gameplay mechanics but they did make mention of a particularity interesting one which has been dubbed "Nemesis System" This is what the press release said on the matter : " Through the Nemesis System, enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by player actions and decisions to create personal archenemies that remember and adapt to the player and are distinct to every gameplay session. Gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player"
This game sounds awesome, I've never actually played any of the other Lord Of The Rings Game, but i was always hoping for a original story in the universe. Still, I've been really hoping for a Lord Of The Rings open world Action/RPG game, given the opportunity to explore the universe and the world further, maybe a game that takes place before the Hobbit and LOTR trilogy. I'd definitely play as a Hobbit. These games don't always have the best track record, so there is a good chance it'll be a sub par game. There is no release date yet, but i would say nothing later then 2015. I'll be watching this game closely in the future.
