So over the course of the year, I've seen a bunch of movies, probably more then the average person sees. I love going to the theater and seeing a huge block buster on the big screen and it is a wonderful spectacle. I've decided to make a list ,BECAUSE I LOVE LISTS, On my top Ten movies I've seen and movies you should see too because they're fantastic so without further ado here is my:
MY TOP TEN MOVIE LIST OF 2013:
.Pacific Rim(July 12th): I LOVE this film, it's virtually a love letter to Japan and a mash up of the Giant Monsters and Giant Mechs genres that are made popular by that country. I'm generally not a huge fan of 3D but watching this film in 3D was nothing short of amazing. It was perfectly done and executed. I'm a huge fan of Guillermo Del Toro, he is best known as being the director of the Hellboy films. He wrote this film with Travis Beacham. The films plot isn't complicated but still highly enjoyable and very unique in this day and age. character development is thin but i found the film's leads very likable and Idris Elba gives a great performance. Overall the film is lighthearted good fun, that would have benefited from an earlier release.the film did average here in the US, it opened in 3rd behind two sequels, but else where in the world the film was a huge success making 407 million on a 190 million budget, which means a sequel is likely.
.Gravity(October 4th): Gravity is one of the most praised if the not THEE most praised film of the year and with good reason. The film is unlike any other that has come out this year. Its quite with the odd intense and highly effective score, and there's only two actors throughout 99% of the movie, Sandra Bullock gives the best performance i've ever seen from her and George Clooney is as charming as ever. The film is a thrilling ride, and it makes you hold your breath all the way through. It has the most beautiful cinematography i've seen EVER in a film and it's so effective at providing a chilling spectacle that it makes horror films like Paranormal Activity cry out in envy. Alfonso CuarĂ³n is a director to watch closely going on in the future. This film was mind blowing in 3D, I highly recommend seeing it in 3D. It smashed Paranormal Activity's 3 record for the biggest October opening ever, and im pretty happy about that. The film has grossed 428 Million against a 100 Million budget.
.Star Trek:Into Darkness(May 16th): I have to be honest, i didn't grow up watching Star Trek, I've never watched the TV show, I've never seen the old movies. When the reboot Star Trek film came out in 2009, i saw it in the movies and loved every minute of it.The cast, the direction, the plot was perfect. However, Into Darkness has stolen the original's spot as my favorite Sci-fi film ever. The universe was greatly expanded in this film, J.J's vision of the future is pure magic, and there's a lot of hidden social themes in this film. all of the major cast members return as well as some new additions. But the real star of this film is Benedict Cumberbatch, he plays one of THE best villans in film history and is the best antagonist of this year. The plot is highly intelligent and the visuals are stunning. The action is thrilling and exciting, with real human moments woven into it, to bring a great and meaningful connection withe the characters. The film did very well at the Box Office earning 460 million against a 190 million budget
.The Great Gatsby(May 10th): Baz Luhrmann's riveting re-imaging of The Great Gatsby is one of the best films of the year. Between the stylistic visual splendor and the excellent music produced by some of the most talented artists such as Florence And The Machine, and the breath taking performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Magui
.This Is The End(June 12th): Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg deliver one of the funniest movies ever made. A hilarious Apocalyptic film featuring an all star line up, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, James Franco, Jay Baruchel and Criag Robinson and Danny Mcbride. The premise is hilarious, seeing these actors play over exaggerated and slightly less intelligent version of themselves is highly entertaining and well worth the watch. The film did well in the box office earning 124 million on a 34 million budget
.World War Z(June 21st): The film based on one of my favorite books ever...is nothing like the book, which i am a bit disappointed about, however the film for what it is, is a great apocalyptic film. Those of you may know the film's director, Marc Forester who has directed Monster's Ball, Kite Runner and James Bond's Quantum Of Solace. Brad Pitt serves as the film's main star, a former U.N officer who tries to keep his family safe and find a cure against the quick spreading zombie virus. The film has decent and intelligent plot, the quick cuts the Forster uses can get annoying, and the film is PG-13 so there's minimal gore and blood. Overall the film isn't a proper zombie film, more of an action disaster film where in place of weather it's zombies. The lack of gore and graphic scene is disappointing since this is in the DNA of the zombie genre But it does a decent job of making an exciting film and Brad Pitt's performance is great. The Film made 540 Million dollars off a 190 million budget
.The Heat(June 28th); Sandra Bullock and Melissa Macarthy team up with the wonderful Paul Fieg to deliver a hilarious buddy cop film. Sandra plays a uptight and overly successful FBI agent, while Macarthy plays a tough, rude and unethical Boston street cop the two team up to bring down a drug dealer. Instant and great chemistry from the film's leads, and great comedic timing from Macarthy make the film highly enjoyable. The film's plot is predictable but is never boring to watch. The film was a success at the box office earning 229 million against a 44 million budget
.Monsters University(June 21st): The prequel to one of my favorite films from my childhood brings together the iconic characters Mike and Sully, and their voice actors Billy Crystal and John Goodman. We also see the return Boardwalk's Steve buscemi as Randy, the main antagonist from Monsters Inc. Nathan Filion and Helen Mirrien play new characters Johnny Worthington and Dean Abigail Hardscarbble respectively. The film is directed by Dan Scanlon. I enjoy the creativity that goes into Pixar's films and Monsters University does not disappoint. The film isn't anything new or innovative for Pixar and isn't better then the original but it's one of the best animated films of the year and the nostalgia trip is well worth the viewing. The film earned 743 million against a 200 million dollars
.Iron Man 3(May 3rd): I admit i wasn't as hyped to see this movie as the others in the list, but i still made a point to see it since i love what Marvel is doing with their films. I found Iron Man as a very enjoyable super hero film, and i actually prefer this to the Man Of Steel. Robert Downy Jr. has earned his place as one of my favorite actors of all time, squarely based as his performance as Tony Stark. Iron Man 3 seems to present the idea that this is the last solo film for the character for a while, which is fine because i'd like to see some more interesting super heroes get the spotlight. The film has some deeper character development for Tony and his relationship with Pepper Pots. The overall plot line isn't strong or note worthy, but it is exciting since it basically is a direct sequel to the Avengers. Overall, Marvel better pick up the pace and work extra hard to ensure the quality stays up to par like previous films, Iron Man 3 comes dangerously close being a dull film. The film is currently the highest grossing film of 2013, earning over a Billion dollars against a 200 million budget
.The Croods(March 22nd): the final film is an animated film brought to you by Dreamworks Studios, In a summer filled with sequels its to sit down and watch a new original film that's good. The film is about a family of cavemen that runs into one of the earliest humans and are sent on adventure to escape an area that's is being subjected to violent earthquakes. The universe is very new and inventive. It's colorful and has a good overall message of to not be afraid of new things and new ideas. The film has some very funny moments that the whole family will laugh at, and overall its just a cute film.Emma Stone, my wife, lends her voice to the movie, as well as Nicholas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Catherine Keneer. The film was a success earning 587 million against a 135 million budget, and is already planned to be a franchise.
